I’ve never really done this before, but here’s a song I literally just wrote called “Old Souls.” It’s not even completely finished or polished, but I thought I might as well go out on a ledge and post the lyrics thus far (Sorry I can’t control the spacing). I am most certainly open to comments and critiques!
“Old Souls”
Love is for young folks
They have the strength to take a fall
But we were born old souls,
just laughing like kids… after all
It is hard to make it
when our doubt has stayed here all along
So easy to fake it
The white picket fence hides all that’s wrong
I didn’t ask for this
It came between us on its own
Is this our last kiss?
Sign for the kids and pawn the home
We used to sing old hymns
that we found inside a piano bench
Love is for young folks
We’ve always been Old Souls

I like that you went out on a ledge and posted this, James!
Personally, I like the melancholy and leave you a twinge depressed kind of songs, so I hope I read it right, because that’s how I took this one
. I took it as two people who, from all appearances, look like they have everything you would want in a relationship. But then on the inside, they are miles apart emotionally. They’re considering ending it, but decide not to — not because of their commitment to each other, but because of their resignation. They believe being an “old soul” is the hand they’ve been dealt.
The only part I didn’t understand is how they were “born old souls, just laughing like kids.” It made me think that being an old soul is a good thing, which seems to contrast with the rest of they lyrics. And that makes me think I misinterpreted your meaning of old souls.
So there you have it. My poorly written literary critique. However misguided I may be, thanks for sharing what you’re working on! I told you I subscribed to your little blog
“We used to sing old hymns
that we found inside a piano bench”
I love/miss you Jameston.
